An Amazing Luxury

In a way it's almost embarrassing how behind the times we are technologically wise when it comes to our media set up here in the Astle house. We have a fairly large tv (we got it for free of course) that's in a built in console and looks like it was built in the late 80s at best. We didn't even get a remote control with it - meaning that we had to manually turn the tv off and on and manually control the volume as well.

Fortunately, we had a loaned VCR from a former roommate of mine which we used to watch our cable channels and it had a remote control, so we could at least use that to change the channels. Sadly, my roomie moved away this past week and wanted the VCR back. It was such a sad day!

So we got on Craiglist and found a $10 VCR (remote control included) for sale. But when we got the VCR home we found out that the batteries in the remote control had corroded making the remote control completely useless.

Finally, we got the inspired idea of checking out universal remotes at Radio Shack. Can you believe that you can get a universal remote for $10? I had no idea. So now I feel like the most spoiled person in the world. Our new universal remote not only controls our VCR (changing the channels, etc), it controls the TV (we can actually turn it on and off with the control!!!!!) and if that wasn't enough it controls the DVD player too. WOW!!!!!

Who knew I could have such a luxury at such an affordable price? It's the little things that make all of the difference.

I know - we were in the stone age.
